Blessing + Curse = Free Fonts!
Free font sites are as much of a blessing as they are a curse.
In a pinch, you can get "that font" that you need to finish your latest design project. Believe me, I've used dafont.com quite a bit.
Unfortunately, this also leads to a lot of font piracy (which most people do unknowingly and without any malicious intent). In addition, it also leads to a lot of people thinking they can create typefaces without knowing anything about typography and thus the internet is flooded with horribly-designed typefaces, or at best, typefaces that are only suited to one thing. To make matters worse, designers who don't know any better (or anything about typography) use these fonts for their design. I'm sure that is, at least indirectly, is how Papyrus gained popularity.
So when you're looking for free fonts, be careful. Make sure you read the licensing information in the readme.* files that come with each one (or it's in the glyphs palette). Overall, if you can find just one decent/useful font for every 100 you come across on a free site, that's a pretty good free font site.

How to Find Copyright Info on Fonts
Generally, you can find the legalities of the font in the readme.txt that's zipped with most fonts you can download. It will tell you if you can or can't use it for commercial purposes, or even if you're allowed to share it with other people.
If it's not in the readme, you can open up the glyphs palette of any font and sometimes the copyright is hidden in there.
I've had experiences with both instances.
